Club History

The Augusta South Rotary Club was established though the direct support of existing Rotary clubs within the local community. Because of the active Rotary participation within the greater Augusta area, in 1995, the Augusta Rotary Club initiated an inquiry to the regional district leadership to determine the procedures required to establish a sister organization.

In response to this request, the regional district leadership promptly convened a committee to organize a new club the following month. The following year, based on the finding of this committee, South Augusta was recommended to the regional district as the best location for a new Augusta club.

In early 1999, an Augusta South organizing committee was appointed by the president of the Augusta Rotary. The first organizational meeting was convened at Goshen Plantation Golf Club in February.

The first official meeting of the provisional Augusta South Rotary Club took place at the Augusta Regional Airport in March of 1999. The meeting day and time was soon determined to be noon every Tuesday, a tradition that continues today.

A chartering banquet was held its 2000, with sponsorship from both the Augusta and Augusta West Rotary Clubs. The Augusta Rotary presented the new Augusta South club with badges and pins. The Augusta West Rotary presented the new organization with a rotary banner, gavel, bell and four-way test banner. Members of the two Augusta sister clubs and regional district office actively served as mentors to the new organization.

The formal Rotary International charter for the club was signed on May 18, 2000. This framed charter was presented to the club during a visit by the district governor in August, 2000.

In January 2003, the Augusta South Rotary moved its meeting location to the Gordon Highway Holiday Inn, where meetings are held to this date.

The Augusta South Rotary Club logo was derived from many important elements within the South Augusta community. The shape of the logo mirrors a military badge; a tribute to Fort Gordon, a major military installation located within South Augusta. The wings represent the Augusta Regional Airport where the club first convened their meetings. The blue and gold elements are tribute to the Rotary International’s official colors.

The Augusta South Rotary Club logo was designed by JJ Puryear, a graphic artist currently working in Greenville, South Carolina. JJ is the son of Joan Puryear, an active member of the club.
